Samnites

The Samnites - Anti-Imperialist since 343 BC. A Confederation of tribes proud of their freedom. They became involved in a series of wars against the Romans. Despite a spectacular victory at the Battle of the Caudine Forks, they were defeated, but never really subjugated. Although severely weakened, the Samnites later helped Pyrrhus & Hannibal in their wars against Rome. They also fought from 90 BC in the Social War & eventually were defeated, at the gates of Rome, in 82 BC. The Roman dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla conducted an ethnic cleansing campaign against them. Few managed to survive, finding refuge on the rugged mountains of the Matese plateau.
